What does an oral surgeon do?
Every patient associates an oral surgeon with a doctor who extracts teeth. But this is not entirely true. With the development of dentistry (methods, technologies), medical equipment and instruments, computer technology, the range of work of an oral surgeon has included many new directions. Among them are dental implantation, tooth-preserving operations, and bone grafting methods.
Tooth-preserving operations are techniques in oral surgery that allow eliminating the inflammatory focus in the tooth, in the tissues surrounding the tooth, and make it possible, ultimately, to save a part of the tooth with subsequent restoration.
Directions of surgical dentistry at iStomatolog in Kyiv
It is recommended to see a dental surgeon in cases of:
- A tooth is decayed down to the roots
- Swelling of the cheek and/or gums near the decayed tooth
- Difficulty with wisdom teeth eruption
- Missing one or more teeth
- Surgical excision of tongue and/or lip frenulum as indicated.

Hemisection
Hemisection is the removal of one of the roots of a multi-rooted tooth. For example, a lower molar with one bad root and one healthy root. The removal is performed on one root, while the other root is treated and covered with a crown.
Corono-radicular separation
Corono-radicular separation is when a multi-rooted tooth has an inflammatory process between the roots. The tooth is sawed through the crown, the inflammatory process is treated, and then restored. This separates the multi-rooted tooth into two single-rooted teeth.
Implantation of teeth
Implantation of teeth is probably the only method in surgical dentistry that allows the restoration of a lost tooth. In this procedure, a titanium rod (artificial tooth root) is inserted into the jawbone in place of the removed tooth, onto which a crown is screwed or cemented through an abutment.
Sinus lift
Sinus lift is a method of increasing the height of bone in the lateral part of the upper jaw by slightly reducing the volume of the maxillary sinus. It is performed in two methods: open sinus lift and closed sinus lift. In an open sinus lift, a lateral hole is made in the bone with access to the maxillary sinus, and a bone substitute is inserted under the Schneiderian membrane (the sinus mucosa). In a closed method, the hole is made through the socket into which the implant is placed (or through the socket of the removed tooth).
Tooth extraction
We strive to save even a tooth that needs to be extracted. We fight for it until the last possibility. But if the removal stage is necessary, our main task is to remove it with minimal trauma to the mucous membrane and bone, since it is for the installation of an implant in the future.
Augmentation
During tooth implantation, the surgeon often encounters a situation where there is not enough bone tissue. In such a situation, operations for directed bone augmentation (bone plastic surgery, bone grafting) are performed. Bone augmentation can be performed on both the upper and lower jaws; the volume of bone can be increased vertically (height of bone) or horizontally (increase in bone width).
Root amputation
Root amputation is performed when a carious or inflammatory process affects one of the roots of a multi-rooted tooth. A part of the root is removed up to the bifurcation (division) of the roots, and the tooth is subsequently prosthetically restored with a bridgework.
Tooth cystectomy
Tooth cystectomy is a surgery to remove a cyst of the tooth root after endodontic preparation of the same tooth. Cystotomy may be performed when the cyst is large or when it is impossible to remove the cyst's membrane. The front wall of the cyst's membrane is removed, and the cyst's cavity is irrigated. Subsequently, the cavity is filled with healthy bone tissue. If endodontic preparation is impossible, root apex resection (removal of a part of the root) is added to the cystectomy.
Bone ridge splitting
Bone ridge splitting is a procedure that allows for an increase in bone width. It can be performed simultaneously with implant placement or as a standalone preparatory procedure. In this technique, bone substitute material in the form of granules or blocks is additionally introduced.
Atypical tooth extraction
Atypical tooth extraction is essentially a complex tooth extraction that requires specific knowledge and skills of the dentist. Examples of atypical extractions may include lower or upper wisdom teeth. Lower teeth are often completely embedded in the bone, and there is a risk of damaging the adjacent tooth or inferior alveolar nerve during their removal. The risk of removing upper teeth is associated with the proximity to the maxillary sinus.

Reviews about iStomatolog
