Treatment of Periodontitis

The cost of periodontitis treatment depends on several factors, including the number of root canals affected, the presence of inflammation in the bone tissue (granulomas or cysts), and the type of disease progression (acute, chronic, or exacerbation of a chronic process). The cost of treating a single-rooted tooth with acute periodontitis is around 70-90 euro, including all visits and root canal fillings. The number of visits required can range from 3 to 5.

Periodontitis treatment under a crown can be done in two ways: with or without removing the crown. If there is no metal casting under the crown, good visibility inside the tooth, and no need to remove instruments from the root canal, treatment can be performed without removing the crown. To do this, a hole is drilled in the crown to provide access to the root canal. After completing the periodontitis treatment, the cavity is sealed with a photopolymer material. If access to the root canal through the crown is not possible, the crown may need to be removed (often by cutting it off). A new crown will need to be made for the tooth.

Treatment for periodontitis is typically done in multiple visits, with intervals of 2 to 14 days between each visit. The first stage involves accessing the root canal, and then medicating and mechanically treating the canal. A medication paste is introduced into the canal, and a temporary filling is applied. The second stage involves repeating the medication process, filling the canal, checking the quality of the filling with an X-ray, and applying another temporary filling. The third stage involves restoring the tooth. Treatment is performed under local anesthesia, and the number of visits required depends on the severity of the condition, the presence of a tooth cyst, and other factors. Periodontitis treatment can take seven days or longer. In cases where a tooth cyst is present, treatment can take several months: a medication is introduced into the root canal to treat the cyst for a period of one to three months, and the tooth cavity is sealed with a special cement.

Tooth extraction is possible with periodontitis, but it is not recommended in cases of acute purulent processes or periostitis (flux). In such cases, it is necessary to first eliminate the purulent inflammation, and then remove the tooth. Purulent inflammation will interfere with healing after tooth extraction.

Ideally, it is best to avoid tooth extraction for periodontitis. However, if it is not possible to properly treat the root canals of the affected tooth, then extraction may be necessary (e.g. if an instrument fragment is obstructing the canal). Tooth extraction is possible with periodontitis, but it is not recommended in cases of acute purulent processes or periostitis (flux). In such cases, it is necessary to first eliminate the purulent inflammation, and then remove the tooth. Purulent inflammation will interfere with healing after tooth extraction.
