How to restore a tooth?
Tooth restoration is essentially filling or restoration of a tooth. It involves restoring the shape and size of the tooth after it has been damaged due to decay or injury.
Tooth bonding is done using photopolymer materials. In situations where the tooth is damaged by more than 50% or is under the gumline, it is more appropriate to place a metal-free crown.
Indications for tooth bonding
Indications for the restoration of the crown part of the tooth include:
- appearance of chips, cracks caused by trauma or decay;
- deep carious lesions that have led to the destruction of most of the tooth;
- improperly installed fillings, leading to the destruction of healthy dental tissue;
- demineralization of enamel;
- closing gaps between teeth;
- darkening of tooth color;
- change in shape and size of tooth;
- extensive non-carious lesions;
- increased tooth wear.
A tooth can be restored using photopolymer materials in cases where the destruction of enamel and dentin does not exceed 50%. In other cases, the choice of the prosthetic treatment is based on the medical indications and patient's preferences.

When is it contraindicated to use photopolymers for tooth restoration?
The use of photopolymers for restoring tooth functionality and aesthetics is contraindicated in the following cases:
- weakened roots;
- the presence of inflammation in the root area (prior treatment of inflammation in bone tissue and root canal filling is required);
- excessive destruction of tooth tissue (more than 50%);
- bruxism.
Using photopolymer is an optimal option for restoring front teeth that were traumatized during impact, sports, or other cases. The dentist restores the appearance of the teeth by selecting a filling material based on color, transparency, and other characteristics. Restoring teeth with caries damage is a more complex task because treatment must be performed beforehand and then the shape of the tooth crown must be restored.
Features of tooth restoration using photopolymer materials
The method of tooth restoration using photopolymer materials solves two problems - eliminates caries and restores the tooth with a maximum aesthetic result. This means that after restoration, it will not stand out in the dental row. Restoration with composite photopolymers is a true art, where the dentist, like a sculptor, creates the shape and selects the shade that corresponds to the natural color of the teeth.
Based on the experience and technical capabilities of the dental clinic (equipment and materials), the doctor chooses the tooth restoration technique in such a way as to ensure structural strength and natural appearance. If the work is done properly, the photopolymer material merges with the natural part of the tooth in such a way that it is practically impossible to notice the line of demarcation. The use of high-tech filling materials allows for the creation of a transparency effect and a light shine characteristic of natural enamel.
Properties and features of photopolymers
Photopolymers are a group of composite materials that have the ability to harden (polymerize) under the influence of UV rays. The materials differ in the type of filler (macro, mini, micro-filled, hybrid), matrix complex, and the ratio between the filler and the matrix. Liquid-flowable and solid polymers are used in dental practice.
Liquid polymers, which have the ability to evenly distribute over the surface and form a dense bond with the tooth tissue, are used for filling the cervical area and restoring the contour of interdental contact points, for smoothing the surface of the tooth before restoration; solid light-curable composites are used in the restoration of frontal and lateral teeth.
Since the material hardens only under direct UV exposure, the dentist can give any shape to the plastic mass, carefully and accurately fill the tooth cavities, without fear of premature polymerization of the filling. In case of a large area of tooth damage, filling during restoration is carried out layer by layer, each time illuminating the material with a lamp until it hardens.
The doctor should be well aware of the properties of all used photopolymer composites in order to correctly choose the filling material for tooth restoration, taking into account the specificity and scale of the damage.
Alternative to filling - veneers
Applying veneers is one option for restoring the aesthetics of teeth with certain defects. Veneers are thin porcelain plates that are attached to the outer surface of teeth. Using veneers, it is possible to change the shape and size of teeth, correct the position of teeth in the dental arch, and also mask such defects as large fillings on front teeth, stains, enamel damage, small cracks, and chips. Veneers conceal some natural imperfections, including irregularities and gaps between teeth.
High-quality veneers do not change color due to food pigments, reduce sensitivity to various irritants, and provide a perfect smile, significantly improving one's attractiveness.
With modern materials, it is possible to achieve maximum natural appearance of teeth, preserve natural individuality of appearance, and improve aesthetic indicators. An unnatural, unnaturally white smile is a sign of poor dental work or an unsuccessful patient choice.
Restoring teeth using inlays or overlays
Chewing teeth are most often destroyed by caries. After removing the damaged tissue, deep cavities are formed, which, in the standard case, are filled with filling material. If only thin walls and the root of the tooth remain, it is advisable to use the technique of restoration using inlays/overlays and crowns. An inlay/overlay is a dental micro-prosthesis that mimics the shape of the tooth and is an alternative to traditional filling.
Advantages of inlays/overlays include:
- Restoration of tooth functionality and appearance
- Longevity
- Resistance to shrinkage and deformations
- Compatibility with dental prosthetics
- Resistance to pigment exposure
- The possibility of installing a crown or bridgework on the tooth in the future.
Inlays and overlays are made from pressed ceramics, zirconia dioxide, and innovative composites. The highest quality products are made from zirconia dioxide and the latest generation hybrid ceramics. Restoring teeth using inlays and overlays is not performed in case of destruction of canines and incisors, high caries activity, and fissure caries.
Tooth buildup on a pin
If the root of the tooth is undamaged, while the crown part has suffered significant destruction, the dentist may suggest installing a prosthesis or restoring the tooth using pins. These are thin rods made of titanium (metal), fiberglass, carbon, which are installed in the root canal to give the tooth strength and distribute the chewing load on the root of the tooth. After fixing the pin, the dentist introduces a filling compound and shapes a new crown. A professionally performed dental work will ensure the restoration of functionality and a long service life of the tooth after buildup.
Installation of crowns
The installation of a crown is a complete prosthetics procedure. It is used in cases of significant destruction of the crown part while preserving a healthy root. The tooth is prepared, damaged tissues are removed, and the walls are trimmed. In our clinic, a digital model of the crown is created instead of a traditional impression using the Cerec technology, so the prosthetics can be completed in one day.

Reviews about iStomatolog
